This is a blog for anyone passionate about the development of the emerging generation of children. A blog meant to encourage, inspire, reveal and question strategies used in forming the next generation of faithful leaders.
I have been searching for and working to develop relevant, engaging, and meaningful ways to shape the emerging generation of students into the adult world. From my seat, and through my research, it appears that many strategies being utilized by church leaders, educators, summer camps, and even within families, are outdated, antiquated and ineffective.
So how do we make faith formation something that's exciting, relevant, and engaging? How do we get students to pursue contributing to Christ's narrative? Can we reimagine the way we do spiritual formation on our campuses, churches, and in our families?
For decades we have used the same antiquated spiritual formation strategies, while the culture around us continues to aggressively engage our children.
“If we want to successfully guide Generation iY into the future, we’ve got to do more than just challenge them to stop doing bad things.” -Tim Elmore
This blog is dedicated to the insistence that we should be challenging our students to become Contributors instead of consumers.
Our culture is seeking to take our children's hearts captive. It is captivating them through the narrative of consumption. Our desire should be to captivate their hearts in such an engaging way that they pursue contributing to society, families, churches, schools, friends, and the gospel narrative.
How do we plant, grow, and nurture this type of faith in children who are disengaged from faith while heavily engaged in cultural pursuits?
Even our children who are open to dialogue about faith, are connected to a church family, and believe in the gospel story are at risk of being overtaken by the engaging culture of our world. Running away and hiding from culture is not an option. Well, it’s at least not a good option.
So, rather than being afraid of culture, is there an opportunity to embrace the aspects of culture that our kids love, and connect it to faith-formative experiences? I believe that opportunity exists, and that is exactly what this blog series will be dedicated to exploring.
Let’s be honest with ourselves, for decades we have been passive in the faith formation of our children. To capture this emerging generation we must begin to take an active role in their formation.
Culture is creating consumers. We should be cultivating contributors.
Let this blog series and this contributor community guide our thinking this year, let it push you to wrestle with a new outlook on engaging an amazing generation of kids, and let it inspire you to develop new leadership or parenting strategies.
Let us hear your contributor story. Periodically, we enjoy offering contributor spotlights and would love to spotlight you or someone you know. Who is making a difference?
